BMO Field Project: Another Step Closer to Completion

March 21, 2016

An important step towards the completion of construction at BMO Field wrapped up last Sunday, February 21 with the installation of the final roof section. Located in Toronto, Ontario, BMO Field is home to major league soccer club Toronto FC and Canadian football team the Toronto Argonauts, which took up residence at the venue just ahead of the 2016 CFL season.

The roof being installed at BMO Field is composed of three canopies that shield the risers in the west, east and south grandstands. Two cranes were required to safely install the third and largest canopy that is 115 m long, 21 m wide, 23 m high (377 ft. x 68 ft. x 75 ft.) and weighs 490 tons (980,000 lb). The 3,600 tons of roof components were fabricated at the Canam Group plant in St. Gedeon de Beauce, Quebec.

With a match scheduled for May 7, 2016, all installation work must be fully completed by the end of April. The project is being executed using a collaborative approach that has allowed PCL Constructors Canada Inc., Canam-Heavy and other teams to assist and support one another since the pre-project phase. Thanks to this approach, the participating teams have been able to maintain the accelerated construction schedule and overcome the numerous challenges that are inherent in a project of this scale.

“We were excited to work with our talented partners at PCL to collaboratively deliver a great experience for Toronto FC and Argonauts fans” said Peter Frantz, Senior Vice President of Canam-Heavy. “We both have great teams in place in Toronto and I’m confident that together, we’ll continue to bring sports fans together throughout North America.”
