Canam Group Among the Winners at ENR’s Best of the Best 2012
March 4, 2013
Marlins Park, the new home of the Miami Marlins, took top honors in the Sports/Entertainment category at the 2012 edition of the Best of the Best Projects competition stewarded by ENR magazine. Canam Group, by means of its Structal-Heavy Steel Construction business unit, built the retractable roof of the new 37,000-seat baseball stadium. Marlins Park is a LEED® Gold certified venue.
An Engineering Marvel
The retractable roof, which is composed of three sections, encloses over 7,000 tons of steel components (by comparison, the Eiffel Tower’s structural frame weighs 7,300 tons). The longest trusses are 560 ft (171 m) long by 45 ft (14 m) deep. The biggest challenge of the project consisted in enabling the massive roof sections to maneuver in perfect sync at a speed of 39 ft (11.8 m) per minute in order to open or close in under 15 minutes.
Canam Group also won an award for this project at the 2011 North America BIM Awards. The integration of the different trades in the central model facilitated work scheduling and reduced errors at the jobsite.
A detailed technical description of the Marlins Park project and the list of construction partners are presented in the February 2013 issue of ENR.com.
Congratulations to all the teams that collaborated in this winning project!
