August 13, 2014
The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) held its annual conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on May 28-31, 2014. During the event, Canam presented the Excellence in Innovation in Civil Engineering Award, which it has sponsored for five consecutive years. This award was created by the CSCE in order to recognize exceptional innovations in all civil engineering disciplines.
Of the three nominees in the running, the award was bestowed to Halifax Water (Halifax Regional Water Commission) for its advance pressure management utilizing automated PRV control in a dual supply DMA.
Carl Yates, Honourary Conference Chair and General Manager of Halifax Water said, “It is an honour for Halifax Water to be recognized by its peers in the field of Civil Engineering. Innovative thinking and effective program implementation benefits our customers, the environment, and motivates staff to keep striving for excellence.”
Reg Andres, President of CSCE, said, “Innovations such as those seen at the CSCE conference in Halifax help make Canada a world leader in the field of Civil Engineering. I am pleased to see such a strong field of candidates this year. Congratulations to Halifax Water for being this year’s award recipient.”
The award recognizes Halifax Water’s position as a world leader in water loss control. Since the implementation of an international best practice in 1999, Halifax Water has reduced leakage in the water distribution system by 40 million litres per day which represents $600,000 in annual savings.
