Fore River Bridge Lift Span Erection

August 22, 2016

The Fore River Bridge lift span in Massachusetts is longer than a football field and weighs almost three million pounds. The huge piece, fabricated at the Canam Group plant located in Point of Rocks, Maryland, was floated on a barge early in the morning of August 15, 2016.

The span, made of nearly 150 tons of steel, is 324 feet (99 meters) long, 78.5 feet (24 meters) wide and varies in height from 33.5 feet (10 meters) at the ends to 43.5 (13 meters) at its center point.

In addition to this piece, the mandate given to Canam-Bridges included fabrication of more than 80 girders for the bridge approaches, totaling 3,345 tons of steel. The project will be completed in 2018.
