Pride & Prejudice, and Wood
March 6, 2018
On February 19, Wood Works announced its 2018 Wood Design Award Winners and Structure Fusion is a proud collaborator and supplier of the winning project in the Regional Excellence Awards. Indeed, the Massachusetts Public-Use Airport Buildings Program, consisting of upgrading 13 regional airports across the State of Massachusetts, was elected winner.
In the last century, wood has been shunned as a structural element in commercial buildings compared to the increased use of steel and concrete. Nowadays, engineered mass timber is being used as a material of choice not only for its structural qualities but as an element of beauty and elegance, and it’s even going beyond the use of a single material and creating hybrid exposed materials.
On the Mansfield and Fitchburg airports, Structure Fusion was contracted to manufacture and install the steel structure columns together with glue-laminated wood beams, as well as a roof of cross-laminated panels. Interesting to mention the building was delivered two weeks ahead of schedule even with the challenge of coordinating the different materials.
