Renovations Completed at BMO Field in Toronto

June 1, 2016

Canam-Heavy, a division of Canam Group, recently completed its involvement as the structural steel contractor at BMO Field to transform this venue into a world-class, multi-use sports stadium. The venue, which reopened on May 6, is now home to both Major League Soccer (MLS) club Toronto FC and Canadian Football League (CFL) team the Toronto Argonauts. Boding well for the new and exciting events to come, BMO Field will host the 104th Grey Cup in November 2016 and the National Hockey League (NHL) Centennial Classic on January 1, 2017.

The renovation project was divided into two phases in order to allow the scheduled summer events to take place. In phase I, Canam-Heavy’s scope of work included the design, fabrication and installation of an 8,400-seat grandstand, bringing the overall seating capacity to approximately 30,000 spectators. While the initial construction schedule allotted 12 months to carry out the work, the teams completed it in only seven months, just in time for Toronto FC’s opening game in May 2015.

In phase II of the renovation project, Canam-Heavy’s services included designing, fabricating and installing a partial roof composed of three canopies over the risers in the east, west and south grandstands. Some 3,600 tons of steel were used to create the canopies, which were primarily fabricated at the Canam Group plant in St Gédéon de Beauce, Québec.

The roof canopy, which covers the south grandstand, measures 377 ft. (115 meters) long by 68 ft. (21 meters) wide and weighs 980,000 lb. (490 tons). It was assembled onsite and installed over the risers in a single section using two lattice boom crawler cranes.

“We are pleased to have had the opportunity to collaborate with a partner such as PCL Constructors Canada (PCL) and to have taken part in the transformation of BMO Field into a world-class multi-use sports stadium,” declared Peter Frantz, Senior Vice President of Canam-Heavy. “This is yet another project that we have successfully executed in partnership with PCL”, he added.
